Do you ever tick that INSURANCE box when booking your flight online? I usually don't. But things changed when I learned that my partner would always tick that little box adding around P200, more or less, to the final price.
Last year, I booked a Manila-Coron flight for 2. I luckily availed of AirPhil Express' promo of P288 basic fare per person. Since I was able to save BIG on the flight fare (and considering that I'll be travelling with beau), I ticked the Insurance box. The additional P220 per person per flight wouldn't hurt much because after all, I got discounted fare.
I never liked insurance. Agents would always, always, foretell clients' DEATH, INJURY, SICKNESS, it just scares me off. I don't think that I could ever be convinced with that kind of marketing. I've always told these agents, I have PhilHealth, and I've always believed that it has been enough. Well, I could be wrong.
Nowadays, you can insure just about anything. I'm sure you've heard about Hollywood celebrities insuring their legs. But on a more realistic note, I would like to share to you my insurance story and how I have recovered some cash due to flight delays.
Chartis' Worry-Free Policy covers your travel's unexpected events such as accidents, lost travel documents, and travel inconveniences. Our flight from Manila to Coron was unluckily cancelled and we spent another 20 hours in Manila before our flight was finally confirmed. This is the first time that I've experienced a very extended delay and it was such a chore. Though it was unlucky for us to be so delayed, which meant that we would have a day less to explore Coron, I thought that I could recover from Chartis. And so I did.
I filed our claims on the deadline. I made sure that my files were complete: airline tickets, boarding passes, terminal fees ticket, receipts for our hotel and recreation bookings in Coron that were never used, a Special Power of Attorney (since I'm filing the claims in behalf of my partner who cannot personally file his), and filled up all the necessary data on the claims form.
Waiting for the insurance's reply was quite exhausting as I expected that it would be sooner. The standard waiting time is 2 weeks, I got my reply in a month. I was happy that we would be able to recover from insurance. Although no amount of money could really compensate for the lost day that we could have spent walking uphill Mt. Tapyas and spending late afternoon at Maquinit Hot Spring, it's better than having not recovered anything at all.
Our check came quite delayed, too. It finally arrived 2 months after I was informed that it was already sent to the courier. The insurance claimant must always be patient and should not hesitate calling the insurance agency and follow-up on his claims. I've already deposited the manager's check that I received from Chartis. Though it took me about 4 months to finish everything (from filing of claims until the check came), I was happy that I took the chance and that my efforts in filing the claims, I have finally achieved my goal.
This is the first insurance claim that I've processed. And I'm quite proud about it. (--,)
