Book Review: I Wish They Taught Money in High School

We all have a little voice of entrepreneurship inside of us. When I was little, I remember collecting old newspapers and selling them at the convenience store near our house. The convenience store uses the old newspapers to wrap sold items and I was paid for every kilo of old newspapers that I deliver to them. I'd be very happy when I would earn as much as P700 on one transaction, I already felt like a millionaire! This happened around 1993 when I was just in Grade 3.

After getting Accounting and Law degrees, I've practiced my profession as a lawyer. But at the back of my mind, I really want to put up my own business. I've had my share of joining the buy and sell bandwagon and I actually enjoyed the business specially since I was selling the things that are interesting for me like cosmetics, swimsuits, fashion accessories, and the like. But I never really had sustained these business. It was more of like a startup, plateau, and eventual downfall of both my interest and resources. Still, I have not given up and I think that in time, I can still fuel up my desire to have a successful business one day.

I guess if I had the right influence when I was a kid, I would have really been in business by now. And if I had the right tools to develop my interest in going into business, I would have equipped myself with not only the right knowledge but also the right attitude for me to become a good businesswoman. It's just timely that I got hold of this book: I Wish They Taught Money in High School.

This little black book is a sea of information with bits and pieces of tips and tricks from the other big business and self-help book authors. The works of Robert Kiyosaki have been widely quoted and applied. But the most important feature of this book is that it is localized. I have not yet seen a book which is so easy to ready, easy to understand, and highly appropriate and applicable in the Philippine setting. I think the fact that this is so customized for Filipinos to be used here in the Philippines is what makes this book awesome.

The book was written based on the authors' own experiences and I have to say that I can relate well with their experiences. I could say that this book was written out of generosity, the authors have so much to share and they really want to share what they learned and experienced so that the other hopeful and aspiring business-minded person could also start and be successful in their fields.

I appreciate that the book has written down the steps in starting your own business -  the licenses and permits that you need to have, the government offices that you need to register to depending on the kind of business that you want to do.

This book is your perfect partner for those times when you're in a coffee shop sipping your hot drink. I also find it very helpful during those times when I'm waiting for a friend. It's as easy as reading a novel but the insights and learning that I got from the book are a lot. Plus, this book actually contains two stories: I Wish They Taught Money in High School So I'm Not Dependent on My Paycheck and I Wish They Taught Money in High School So I Can Start My Own Business Right Away. I guarantee that this book will be an investment to yourself.
