Keeping Your Family and Home Safe

To keep your home safe, you may have installed a security system and have it regularly monitored by a home security monitoring company at a central station. This is the best way to keep your home protected from burglars and fire, but there are some additional steps you can take to help prevent these disasters.

How to Prevent Burglars

  • Keep all doors, windows, gates, patio doors and garage doors locked. If you have a sliding door, put a stick in the running grove, so the door cannot be slid open after the lock is picked
  • Outdoor lights are a great deterrent to robbers. Lights with motion sensors will flood your yard with light as soon as a robber steps on to your property
  • Set up a neighborhood watch. This will help the whole neighborhood. You home will never look vacant because your neighbors will pick up any papers or mail and turn on and off lights. You should put signs along the streets that clearly say the neighborhood is protected
  • Keep your garden neat and clean. Burglars like to hide in bushes before they break into a house

 How to Prevent Fire

  • Never leave stoves, candles, space heaters and any other hot objects unattended
  • Replace frayed or damaged electric cords
  • Have furnaces and stoves regularly maintained
  • Install smoke alarms and check them regularly
  • Keep a functioning fire extinguisher in your kitchen and basement

Vacation Safety Tips
According to statistics, burglars prefer to rob a building where they are absolutely sure there is no one inside. When you go away for several days or weeks, you need to make your house appears to be occupied. This may not fool everyone, but it will deter most attempts of break-in.

  • Set your alarm system and tell your monitoring company that you will be away for a specific period of time • Make sure you neighbors or someone else picks up your mail and newspapers
  • Put your lights on a timer, including outdoor lights. You can even put a television on a timer to give the appearance that someone is home
  • Make sure all your doors and windows are locked before you leave

Investing in a home security system that is monitored by a central station is your best option for keeping your family and possessions safe from burglars. In many cases, this type of security system will also reduce your homeowner’s insurance premiums.
