April is Autism Awareness Month

Having graduated from a school which also caters to special children, I am familiar with autism. In fact, it was my topic for my high school term paper. I was particularly fond of a child named Mark. He was then 5 years old. It was a lot of years ago when I first met Mark at our school. He was a bright kid, jovial, energetic, and autistic.

What is autism?

Autism is a disorder of neural development characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior. The diagnostic criteria require that symptoms become apparent before a child is three years old. Autism affects information processing in the brain by altering how nerve cells and their synapses connect and organize; how this occurs is not well understood. It is one of three recognized disorders in the autism spectrum(ASDs), the other two being Asperger syndrome, which lacks delays in cognitive development and language, and pervasive developmental disorder, not otherwise specified (commonly abbreviated as PDD-NOS), which is diagnosed when the full set of criteria for autism or Asperger syndrome are not met. In my school, there were a lot of children who have autism and from what I have observed, sometimes, these children have tantrums. However, it's very good to point out that autistic people can be trained and educated. In fact, those diagnosed of autism display some special talents and skills, and some are very intelligent.

People with autism need a lot of understanding. They are different, but they are still human beings.
