I'm just cooking Pasta!

It's so hot! I just came from the office and arriving home at 4 in the afternoon is such a rare event. Well, my mama greeted with me a refreshing glass of orange juice and I am in the mood to eat some pesto.

Currently, I'm cooking pasta and I have some 3 minutes of cooking time before it's done. Over the past week, I've been wanting to cook my own pesto sauce and although I've purchased a bottle of olive oil and basil, I still haven't made my own pesto.

I've been using ready-made Filippo Berio Classic Pesto that I bought at Savemore. As with the basil, I purchased the basil plant and have transferred it to a pot, another addition to my growing herb garden! =)

I'm not really a good cook so let me just share with you how I make my pesto:

  1. Cook your pasta. I used Royal Pasta and boil it for around 12 to 15 minutes. To boil around 300g of pasta, don't forget to sprinkle salt and a tablespoon of olive oil (cooking oil will do) in 4 liters of water.
  2. Strain the pasta and rinse it with tap water. It's important to drain and strain the pasta immediately after turning the heat off because leaving it swimming in hot water could actually make your pasta overcooked!
  3. After fully draining your pasta, you may now mix Philippo Berio Classic Pesto. The pesto label says that you may put 6 to 8 spoonfuls of pesto to your pasta. I don't really follow the instructions and just estimate the amount of pesto that I need.
  4. After mixing, your pesto is now ready! But I recommend adding some pepper and fine salt to suit your taste.
  5. Add cheese! I couldn't imagine pasta without cheese. Parmesan cheese is best for Pesto, but I use what's currently on stock: Eden Cheese! =)

Enjoy your pesto! I'm not a good cook but I do enjoy preparing this simple recipe. And what's best about this is that my family enjoys eating my pesto, too. No sweat pesto courtesy of Filippo Berio!

This is silly, but please bear with my ignorance. I love to try other Italian pasta dishes as I only know carbonara, lasagna and spaghetti. What does pesto taste like? I've seen a malunggay variant of it and I'm so clueless how it would match my ordinary Pinoy palate.

    1. Hmmm, that's a hard question as I'm not really good with describing food tastes. Hehehe! If you're familiar with basil then I guess you'll have a slight idea of how it tastes. It's light compared to the sweetness of spaghetti or creaminess of lasagna. Pesto's taste is more on the salty side, but not too much saltiness.

      It's actually a healthy dish. =)

  3. Have you tried cooking tuna pesto pasta? =) It's a lot similar to your process, except that I use only olive oil mixed with basil leaves (we bought a bottle of this from the store) -- instant pesto mix! =) It was delish. =)

I've tried, quite unsuccessfully, making my own pesto from scratch. I pounded as much basil leaves as I can and instead of pine nuts which is hard to find and cost like crazy, I used cashew nuts. My sister had to make a few adjustments to make it taste quite remotely like pesto.

    1. I initially wanted to do mine from scratch and would have used cashew also because I couldn't find pine nuts! Buti na lang nakita ko yung Filippo.

  6. Whew, I am preparing for having a beach resort and restaurant business staring last year. I am doing my MS in business management to prepare myself in the administration. About cooking, all I can say is that its not my field of specialization. But, I do love eating pasta. In fact its my ultimate favorite! Well, let me do the eating, just don't let me cook :)

Anyway my partner in business and in life is he one who knows how to cook and everything. He is a certified chef...

    1. That's good. Secured ang food. As for me, I should start learning how to cook. It's given for girls to do the cooking. I'm not a good cook but I should at least know how to make some edible food. Baka mag walk out bigla ang partner ko dahil sa gutom. Wag naman sana! Hahaha!

Between Clara Ole and Filippo Berio, I'd go for the latter because it's more flavorful and has more basil.

  12. green pesto is made from basil, nuts, olive oil. This bottled pesto is okay but you have to use it as it perishes fast. They also have the tomato pesto but it's not so nice. You can also use the green pesto on biscuits and hard bread with wine...yummy!

  13. thanks for sharing... i would however prefer freshly made pesto... it has been a staple in our house..

  17. Pasta is one of my weakness!

I prefer meaty ones, or those with strong or complex flavors. Your post reminded me of this certain pesto dish that I tried before, it has tuyo in it. It's really good.

Anyway I might try this one soon to cure my random pasta cravings :D
